Tahoe

I went to Tahoe for the weekend. I planned to ride on Saturday, but Sat morning I realized I had left my boot liners back in Santa Cruz. I was hungover and feeling a bit lazy, so I just decided to stay in and drink all day. We got 2 kegs of Pabst and 1 keg of Fat Tire for the weekend for 35 people. We proceeded to play beer die, beer pong, thumper, and flip cup until we couldn't remember where we were. It was alot of fun and we left early Sunday for the 4.5 hour drive back home. Everything went well, although I lost 3 BIs playing poker from the cabin. I am recovering now and really eager to begin working out really hard every day this week. Its not easy staying skinny, but I really want to be skinny by Vegas.

Making Life Better

Whether you believe in God or not, you have to admit, you are only given one life as who you are on Earth. Many people tell you to make the most of it, but that can be taken so many different ways. Some people drink and smoke, living life in the moment and destroying their body in the process. Some people take huge risks like mountain climbing, sky diving, etc. And some people play the game of life conservatively, enjoying small pleasures, and being satisfied without taking risks. In the game of life, we must make the most +EV decisions in order to come out ahead. When we put our poker skills into play while making a real life decision, we put ourselves ahead of others in the game of life.

; Just like the hit board game, life can take many unexpected turns. Logic, psychology, math, and disguise are all skills acquired from poker that help with life’s small and big decisions. We can use logic to determine the best route to and from school, as to save a few minutes a day (+EV). We can use psychology to convince our friends that we should all go to the movies rather than the bowling alley. We can use math when splitting the bill at a restaurant. And we can disguise the strength of our beer pong skills before facing off against a couple of cocky opponents. Poker skills extend far past the computer monitor or the table; look to make correct decisive choices when presented with any problem.

; Regardless of the situation, making the best decisions all the time will yield us the greatest utility throughout life. This is why it’s good to take care of your body, learn about everything, and stay focused on the end goal. With every decision, ask yourself, “Will this yield me the greatest utility in the long run?” Another way of putting it is, “Is this how I want to live my life?” or “Will I be happy about this decision later?” Look to optimize your life whichever way you want to live it. It’s +EV.

Weekly Blog Article

I have decided that I want to add something special to my blog. So starting either tonight or tomorrow I am going to put up a short poker article every week on my blog. Its going to be unprofessional and not something I want to post on the articles tab or put up anywhere else really. My first topic is going to be "life is better when you know poker" or something like that. I will write it and have it up in a day or so and keep em coming from there. Feel free to throw out topics that you want me to talk about.

Also, I have an article coming out soon called "The Economics of Poker" so keep an eye to the articles tab, it should be up soon.

I expect to get 4bet light sometimes, and here I am trying to induce a shove, whereas I feel if I shove allin, he folds alot of the time. So the flop is horrible, but I feel I have gotten too much of my stack in pre to be folding this flop. My read is pure genius and emphasizes the weak play of some of the regulars. If he had AK he would shove allin preflop. If he had AQ, he would probably do the same. I don't know why he would have a weaker ace, and if he has AA he probably checks the turn. If he had TT he would get it all in pre, so my read on the turn is that he might be turning JJ into a bluff or something, or just some sort of really stupid pure bluff. I am sure he shows up with AQ or something a little bit of the time, but honestly I don't know why he is doing that, its good for me that he is though. So I call and it was a good call, but I am certaintly tilted by the result because this is a very rare situation, the variance won't be coming back around my way for a while.

Obviously I am fine with getting all my money in preflop after seeing his style at its loosest. So I make a similar 5bet for the exact same reason as before. I kinda feel that he will frequently overread into it and think I am bluffing more likely here than the last hand. So I think I am outleveling him, because I think he thinks: He knows I just saw him do this with KK so he (Me) must be trying to steal another pot as a bluff here. That being said I guess he is planning the stop and go because he figures it will create more fold equity. On the flop I am most worried about AQ, but other than that its not a horrible board to make a light stack off. I definetely calculated the FD as part of his range as well as any pair and given the previous hand I may have made a slightly tilty call, which happened to be good. Again he sucked out and I lost another stack to him. I didn't berate him in chat although I felt like it, I just said its been a while since one person single handedly put me on tilt. I am going to play some Call of Duty 4 for an hour and hopefully return with a fresh mind.

My girlfriends parents are coming into town for the night, to check out her art show which is up all week on campus (UCSC). I am suppose to be going to Tahoe tomorrow, but I might back out. I need the hours here, and NOONE understands that. This "Its poker you can do whatever you want, bring your job with you" bullshit is really pissing me off and my gf is the last person to back me up :/

Frustrating Day

I played 2 sessions today. The first I ended up $1200 and the second I lost $1500. Even during the first session, I was running horrible. I played well lost 2/3 big flips, and other standard stuff. Somehow I got people to just hand me a bunch of money at the end, do to my maniac looking image. Then I sit down and play a second session after dinner. I am feeling great, and playing great. I made a bad payoff when I had AA, then I had to fold 2 sets, got it in with another set and was behind, and lost a big pot with AA, and other ridiculous stuff. I lost a big flip against Adam001 when I 3bet and made a tiny 5bet to induce a shove, and he min6bet and I shoved JJ he called with AK and obviously hit. I stacked him on another table where I 3bet KK cbet a flop 999 checked the turn, and overbet shoved the river. I knew he couldn't get away, although in the future he might. I am very frustrated ending down for the day. There is definetely some sick variance associated with this LAG/TAG 6max, but I am also expecting profits sometime in the future. I have only made $380 for the month of January, over 16k hands. If I don't start making money by February I will either need a stake or a job, and I am not getting a job!

I am happy with the way I played, and am just gonna shake off today with some video games and come back tomorrow and try and play a 6 hour session. One thing I am noticing is that I make good money for the first 2 hours then near hour 3 I lose, it might be me or it might be my mind making a pattern where there isn't one.

Playing LAG 6max

Well it felt good playing 26/22 I didn't run good at all. I was playing a couple HU tables and lost during the overall session, but here are my stats for my new style 6max game which I totally stole from sweating tjbentham for 20 minutes:

I can really get used to this playing style. What I am going to do is work hard to mix up my game while 4 tabling 6max. I will adjust down to 19/17 after half a session at 28/24. Of course this is all opponent dependant, may go the other direction. This will likely help me with my HU my 6max and my FR game, but I feel my BB/hr will suffer for a while during this period. Oh well its worth it. Tjbentham said something totally amazing to me the other day: "If you just fix one small leak in your game, that can make you $5/hr more for the rest of your life." That adds up fast.

I'm stuck at the airport waiting for my ride home. PCA was awesome and meeting Shana's parents was pretty cool but a lil awkward.

Things were kinda a blur the last few days. Three nights ago we got a table at Aura the nightclub and I proceeded to spew $2500 on booze and have a total blast. Two bottles of Patron 3 bottles of Grey Goose and a bottle of rum later half of our crew got kicked out for being too drunk. Tjbentham was the first to go relatively early in the night. Then Fin was bumped out and ended up getting lost outside and waking up in a flowerbed, off the hook Fin!!!

Danny (Clay's sister's husband) got kicked out for being too drunk. Meanwhile his wife and Tommy Chen's girlfriend, Tiffany, randomly decided to make out on me. We were just chillen at the table possibly talking or something, one is to my left the other to my right, and they musta looked deep into each others eyes and just knew they had to kiss or something, cuz from what I remember it wasn't making much sense, but hey who can argue.

They tried to kick out Tom (Brystmar), and eventually they kicked out my girlfriend Shana, and it took 4 Atlantis employees to wheelchair her to the taxi cab. I carried her home (literally), paid some guy to make sure she didn't try to wonder around outside, and went back to the party to finish paying the bill and stuff. Overall a very eventful night. The next day we all felt like shit, I almost lost myself at Chop Stix, but managed to make it to the Supernova VIP party and have a decently good time with some free wine. We met up with a bunch of people and ended up hanging out at Clay's for a while then back to our condo for Guitar Hero III and Rock Band. I got to sweat Peachy and tjbentham for a while and learned alot that night. TJ has given me an offer for lessons, which I have to take, but won't be able to afford for a little while.

I lost every credit card roulette I played in :( I officially run worse than Echo. All in all that was about 2k in food, 2k at the nightclub, and I somehow owed Brystmar 4k. I am back to being broke again for a while, but I will scrounge up the money and be ballin again by the end of the month. I am going to play like a champ and win alot this month. I promise.

Right now I am at Shana's grandparents in Florida. We are celebrating her grandfathers 90th birthday later today, and I get to hang out and meet the family. We leave for home tomorrow where I am looking forward to relalxing and playing poker for a long time.

PCA Days 1-3

Here at PCA things are off the hook. Starting at the beginning:

Day 1A

We checked in to our hotel and set up Guitar Hero and played it for a little while, waiting for Tom and Nate to get in. Then we headed out to the Atlantis, about a 3 minute walk, and found our way to the poker tables. We watched some friends playing in Day 1A and then I got on the list for 2/5 and proceeded to make $2500 in a few hours. I planned on playing all night but got talked into going to Fathom for dinner, with a bunch of people. The names I remember are: Tommy "tcblade" Chen, Tom "Brystmar" Berg, Clay "MezmerizePLZ" Macguire, AJ "DoomerFD" Gonzales, Eric "pinball," and my girlfriend and Tommy's gf, and Clay's sister and husband Maurine and Danny and a few other people. The food was good and I ended up heading back to the tables afterwards and made some scrilla.

Day 1B

We met up with all our new friends from last night and went out to some food at the local pizza and deli place. As soon as I was done I went to the poker tables and stayed there as long as I could. I don't remember how much I made, but I definetely left with a couple more buy ins than I started with. We went to dinner at an Italian restaurant that starts with a C (iunno). It was family style and it was pretty good. There was a group of us at one table, then Khan, Clay,
Peachy (Eric), and Pinball (Eric) were at a table next to us. We wanted to meet up and go to a night club, but nothing ended up happening because the night club was closed and the bar we went to was alright, with good music, but I left pretty fast to play poker again, and stacked a superrichdonk for 1k. This guy had a 40k watch a 100k ring and a 17k necklace. He said the most hilarious thing at the table. I noticed he had two cell phones, so I asked him, "why do you have two phones?" and he replied pretty hammered, "Because I'm a baller." Me and Doomer were sitting right there and just started laughing, and I was like, that is a damn good answer. This guy was raising dark $125 and just having fun, so the hand I stacked him is pretty irrelevant.

Day 2

I had a few friends going into Day 2, Clay, Eric "pinball," Eric "Peachy Keen" Lu (however you spell it), RainKhan, and um someone else I can't remember who though right now. Pinball busted but the other 3 made it to Day 3 which is awesome. Meanwhile I was playing the 1k tourny which had 300 entries. Pretty donkey field, but I never had an opportunity to capitalize and found myself in push fold for 2 hours. It was hell and I eventually got knocked out. Eric Lu had 30% of me so I am sorry it didn't work out well. The structure was pretty high variance, I went from 25 big blinds, which means I can't really resteal, to 12, which means I can't really resteal. So I was never in a good position chip wise, I would have been better off losing chips earlier than just never picking up hands and being pushed out of pots constantly by earlier players raises. I literally played 6 hands total over 4 or 5 hours and almost never had it open folded to me. So that was hell and I went to dinner at Nobu afterwards. We had alot of Sake and beer and alot of fun, it was pretty much the same group, with Khan giving autographs at the head of the table. I was wearing my new Supernova PokerStars shirt that has my screenname ActionDJ on it, and a few people said they knew who I was, so that was cool. After getting drunk I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, but eventually found my way back to the poker tables and stacked some superaggrodonk when I flopped bottom set and he (as PFRer) check called (4way to flop). He check raised the turn (we are 2 BI deep) and I shove, he calls with turned top pair and a flush draw (Q9s on board 9863). I hold, and feel good about it, doubling up for ~900. The very next hand he raises and I 3bet 77 in position, we are 4 BI deep now. He calls flop is 7 high he checks, and I am like one time do something stupid cmon. He folds to my cbet and o well, ez monies.

Day 3

So here we are on day 3. I have high hopes for my friends. Today will be the bubble and in the money day so I am stoked to see what happens. I am going to go eat and go to the waterpark for a while, then play poker for as long as I can. I will keep ya updated.

Here I think I am running a super good bluff, and plan to make a big bet on the river. I think my opponent can only call with QQ here, and he has it. I know him, and he knows me, he is very capable of folding. Tell me what you think.

I played 2/4 6max today for about 30 minutes made 3 buy ins and decided to call it a day :P

Overall, I was very disappointed with my FR play today and I plan to restrict myself to 12 tables maximum from here on out. I just ran hot at 6max and played decent. I still question my decisions a little more than I would like. Ever since the downswing of November I just haven't had the same level of confidence, and it shows. Once I have a good winning January I will hopefully get back on track and continue to show 3-4 PTbb/100 winrates.

2007 Recap - Detailed!!

Disclaimer: I may or may not have made this money, this is just a guesstimate (this is here for tax reasons).

I am just looking back on the year. This is my first year as a "professional." My score isnt so impressive. I think I have a few different databases, so we will start with the one I am using now.

As you can see there are a few decent sized "variance swings" that end up hurting my winrate alot. I lost 3.7k in 2/4 6max, which I don't play too often but was doing it to change up my game after coming back from Aruba. I honestly don't think I played that great and quickly went back to FR. I of course can play and beat 6max games but in November I was really discouraged to continue because it was a -15k month. In fact if you take out the month of november I run around 4 ptbb/100 for 3/6 FR and 3 ptbb/100 for 5/10 FR. I believe this data represents somewhere around August til now.

This DB is called May:

I am not sure but I think it continues on into June. I could be wrong, maybe New starts in June, but whatever the case this is helping me determine my yearly winnings. This month was when I realized I made enough to pay for my own schooling, housing, etc. and still be baller on the side.

Here is March 2007:

This is my Lifetime DB from 1/1/07:

I am not sure if this DB overlaps with the May and March DB's. It has hands from the first of the year up until August 23rd. I remember trying to load all my DBs into this one to get a lifetime earning (which is ridiculously slow) and I of course gave up on that at some point. It looks like this DB has March and May included, I will keep the results from those DBs up but they aren't really as important as the results from here are

I averaged about $100/hr throughout the year, which is alright but not spectacular. Remember I started at .50/1 making maybe $20/hr for the first 4 months.

I played 445,346 hands over 648.73 hours (the equivalent of 27 days of my life or 7% of the year).

My biggest winning month was September for $17,809.73 (4 ptbb/100 at $243/hr for 73 hrs).

My biggest losing month was easily November for $11,133.85 (-$275/hr over 40.5 hrs). July is the only other losing month at -3kish.

I made a grand total of $74251.29.

I may have made around 10k playing live although that may be an overestimate. I am happy with this result. But I will not be satisfied if next year looks like this one. I have big plans for next year, definetely thinking 300k is an easy goal, unless online poker gets banned of course.

I also made a couple hundred on Cake Poker which doesn't allow PT tracking, and I am sure I played around 10k hands there as well.

I made a little over 300,000 VPPs on Stars with $6630 in FPP rakeback, a TV, Ipods, Cameras, Books, and other stuff.

New Years Resolution Time

Someone asked me what my new years resolution was, and I realized I haven't put much thought into it. My goals are certaintly changing quickly. After finding a few months of rapid success, I thought my goals would be to work my ass of to be the best and wealthiest poker player that I can be. Now, I just want to be financially secure, and have fun while travelling around and playing poker, and of course working for CardRunners. I am looking to move up in the stakes, but for now, I plan to stay in the midstakes for a long while, and eventually work hard to become better. I am quite happy with $200/hr, and I want to work the low variance route until I have my "back-up plans" in tact.

My back up plan's mean: money in the stock market, starting a retirement fund, 10k in cash in my safe, and 10k in my bank account. I think I can accomplish this pretty fast now that I am out of college. Financially I am shooting for 300k, which I think is a bit low, but with the variance I seem to always hit, who knows. A car and boat are absolute goals of mine. I wish I could believe I could own both by June, in time for wakeboarding, but I'm really not sure about that. I should have both by December no problem. Owning a boat while being in Vegas would be off the hook, but obviously I need a car first, to tow it.

Lately my blog posts have been subpar, my most important resolution is to improve my blog quality. I could easily do a daily or bidaily update, with hand histories, pics, and more exciting personal life stuff, but I have just been less motivated in posting here, and more motivated in playing (because I am in a tense downswing). Once I am back on top I will certainly post frequently.

For CR, my work goals are: Getting in touch with marketing people from casino's. Making a CR pamphlet, which will sit on the magazine rack next to CardPlayer in local casino's, help host CR get togethers in LA and Vegas, and most importantly, to truly become one of the team and be excepted as a coworker by "the greats" (Taylor Andrew Ezra Brian Brian CTS and Mike).

If time is money, then my computer is costing me thousands. I hate how every computer starts out running really fast, but as you add applications, it bogs down and eventually just crawls along until you feel like throwing something out the window. I have never been pissed at a bad beat the way I get pissed at my computer for running so slow. The funny thing is, I ask alot for the computer. But can't someone build me a system where I have Mozilla, Windows Media Player, Itunes, Poker Tracker, Poker Ace hud, AutoHotKeys, 12 tables of Pokerstars, and trillian, all running in harmony with no lag. Is that so much to ask? It takes my computer 3 minutes to shut down. From the log in screen until the time where I can load a poker table it takes over 4 minutes. I am writing this blog post on my laptop while my computer is being restarted... Moving along.

I had an alright day yesterday. I played great and won money, but lost 3 big allins as 80/20, which offset my winrate. Still ended at 3 ptbb/100 over 4k hands, I played 2 2k hand sessions, and am now pretty close to completing the 300k VPP bonus on Stars. This bonus is essentially a free $2500 ($3000 - the cost of 50k FPPs which is about $500). Its awesome stars is so good to their main players. While I have been working on this and not playing on cake, I am thinking of taking a decent portion of my cake roll and moving it back over. It would just be a safer play. Cake is great, but without 16 tabling and PAHUD, its just hard to say its better.

Overall poker is going alright. I just lost 800 in 230 hands today but am willing to give it a whirl again. In 230 hands I went to showdown 6 times, had Ace high 3 times, lost with 2pair one time, and had a one card 7 high flush the other and won 14$, obvy variance, but I was tilting from it and went for a break immediately. I feel refreshed after posting in the blog and will go for another run after playing som Smash bros at a friends house tonight.

I had a crazy week with 600 drunk college students. It started off with a plane ride from Sacramento to Spokane, Washington where I met up with my friends Scott and Tom, and Scott's friend Christie. We rented a Jeep Cheroke Lorado and rolled up to Fernie, Canada in British Colombia. We got stopped at the border and hastled for a good hour, where our friend Scott had to pay $200 to get across, just because he had gotten wreckless driving 2 years ago. Well that sucked, but we continued on. We had run into some All Cal'ers on busses while we were at the border, and as we are in the midst of passing them on this two lane road heading up to Fernie, we see the bus in front of us crash right into a side rail around a sharp corner. It busted open the luggage compartments and some luggage fell out. So we spent the next 30-45 minutes helping them and then moved on. Tom and I eventually side bet our arrival time, at 11 PM, I was driving and took the under. So of course I began to speed, and Scott is like, slow down, bets off. So we made the stipulation that if any person in the car felt endangered at any time, I would lose the bet. But I sped anyways and we got there at 10:56, as I knew we would :P

We arrived and got situated, and immediately began to drink. It turns out booze in BC is about 2.5x more than in the States, so its $55 for a 30 pack. That sucked but didn't stop us. Monday we rode and it was good powder. I totally overworked myself and was sore the rest of the week from that one day. Afterward we stocked up on booze, and drank of course. There was a killer welcome party where I boat raced (pounded beer) and flipped cup (drinking game) for Santa Cruz. Shana (my GF) was really hammered and we weren't really getting along so I left her alone for the night and me and some friends headed back to our condo kinda early to play some beer die (my obvious game of choice throughout the trip, I played mainly with Nick Nelson as my partner, but Tom was sometimes). In the middle of one of our games, people bust in carrying Shana, and of course we start Chanting, "Shana Can't Walk" and she claims someone bit her ankle, but of course she just fell in her 5 inch platforms in the snow and sprang it really bad and didnt remember.

We went to the hospital the next day and got it looked at, they charged us over $500 and gave us some Acronym "RICE - Rest Ice Compress Elevate" or something and sent us on our not so merry way. Since I was hungover and already missed the first half of the day, I decided not to ride on tuesday. I stayed in with some good friends and played beer die til I didn't remember how I got to Canada :P Tuesday night we had our pub crawl. Tom and I held down a pool table for 3 or 4 games and we moved around to some nice bars around town. We were the first people to head back to our cabins and promptly passed out.

Wednesday I woke up without too bad of a hangover, and decided to ride as much as I could. I met up with my Dad and family and rode for about 3 hours before I just couldn't ride anymore. I coasted downhill to the bar called the Griz, where I proceeded to drink until I forgot how to get home. We played beer die in the bar and won every game, skunking this one team (that means a naked lap, which they paid off the next day). Eventually my Dad and his friend Jeff rolled in and tried to play beer die with us. The lost obviously and drank a decent amount as well. After about 8 pitchers (at $15 a piece) I decided to look towards alternative drinking methods and walked home (plus it was getting dark). My girlfriend quickly made it clear that she was pissed at me for some reason or another (turns out I wasn't paying attention to her or some crap :P) so I avoided her as I was drunk, and continued to have fun. Later we worked out our issues and all was right with the world.

Thursday I promised her lunch so I rode for a couple hours until I was so sore that my gait was slower than hers. I drove our car down to town and we looked for sushi, found out it was closed, and decided to go to a restaurant and bar which was decent food. I stayed relatively sober throughout the day, but was challenged to a rematch of beer die against my Dad. We ended in a tie because they had to leave to dinner, and we never finished. I had been trying to be relatively sober this whole time because Thumper was coming up and I am considered one of the best, and had hopes of winning. Thumper can be pretty similar to poker tournaments. Starts with 6 tables 8 players and goes down to a final table where 1st 2nd and 3rd get points for their school. I ended up getting 4th and my protege got 1st. Immediately after I found out my GF was crying outside because the president (Keith) from our school was drunk and shoved her to the ground (f*ck you Keith). I had to leave immediately (even before giving my friends shots at the bar as I promised I would do). We hung out back at the cabin and calmed her down. When people got back I played some drinking games and went to bed pretty early.

Friday, we packed up. Tom and I put everything in our car while everyone else had to leave by bus. We left them and got an extra day of riding in. It was the first day where the sun had actually came out and it was beautiful, it also dumped about 8 inches the night before. We had a blast and on our final run through the park Tom says "Go big or go home" and proceeds to overshoot the final jump and stub his thumb up pretty bad. We got it iced and I drove us all the way back (5 hours). Our flights were the next day, so we had alot of free time. We ate at a world class steak house which was out of prime rib, but had decent food. Then we saw I Am Legend at the crappiest Imax theater in existence. The theater had two major problems, the seat arrangement did not allow for optimal viewing, if you were in the early rows you had to move your head all the way from one side to the other. The other problem was worse. They had poor audio quality, with that annoying humming noise blasting the whole movie. The movie is awesome though and I bought my parents tickets to it for Christmas. Afterwards we decided to rent a hotel room near the airport where I played poker and made some money then went to bed late and woke up early. Playing poker in Washington is a felony, and can land as much jail time as child pornography. It didn't stop me although I careful, but I still played in the airport for a few hours and made some monies with no trouble. I got on my flight and made it home without any problems. My Dad and sister are now sick, likely from the trip.

I have a few more days at my parents then I go home to work for CR and play poker, then San Fransisco for New Years (anyone interested?) and PCA a few days later. Life is taking off but my bankroll is not. I made $1200 on Allcal which is cool and covers the costs for the trip, but it doesn't cover the variance I am hitting. I will make another post soon that describes my December, I am up, moving slow and steady, but not where I want to be.

This is it, I leave for AllCal tomorrow, and all my friends just left today. I have some portable work I can do for CR, although I am not sure how well I will be able to focus, since I will be drunk for literally 80% of the time and hungover for the other 20%. But I know I will find some time, cuz I like the work and I want to stay busy.

TY 62k from nowhere. I called my Dad and apparently the money was suppose to go to his account (what a baller), and they are transfering it out in a day or two. I actually had the opposite reaction of my girlfriend when I saw the transaction, I was like, O NO, this isn't good, and she is like why, and I am like, cuz someone is gonna want there money and they are gonna be looking for me.

I guess thats it for now. Poker is very slow and life is very busy, I have been spending like I am a baller, but I am going broke, fast. I need to solve my financial problems soon, or I am going to run straight into the ground. Hopefully after PCA I will slow down on spendings, and pick up some cash from playing in the games there. I am starting super conservative route, and I am done with tournies for now. (These are just my thoughts pouring out of my head). See ya guys in a week.

Had a semi bad session, I lost 3 buy ins. I started playing like god but even though I fucked up at the end I think I got coolered alot. I lost 200 with AA and 450 with Aks. I may have made a bad play against Wobbly_Au. He owned me twice today, he must think I am super LAG or something, his play is likely very bad against me, but it works, its like reverse smart stupidism. Instead of shoving for value when I check raise he calls, so instead of stacking me he gets the pot as is, saving me $200 when I am likely drawing to 5 outs. If he had AK high then he totally pwned me. Then in another hand we were deep and I felt he couldn't continue without a set or flush on the turn, so I turned my overpair into a bluff and was surprised to get check raised allin. It really sucked because I usually would check behind there, but I may have been a little off may game and bet and been immediately punished (which is very frustrating). Then I proceeded to lose alot of flips, make a bad shove against a donk who led with a gutshot and hit a pair (I had OESD). Then I got called down by JJ on an Axx board when I had a pair and a straight draw and missed. I thought about overshoving the river but I wasn't sure if this regular folds AQ AJ, and looking at his play it doesn't look like he is folding JJ so I am glad I didn't bluff the river, his play is atrocious since I usually have him crushed or have the combo draw which I had, nh sir.

This hand is against a supernit, and I was pretty sure he had QQ KK or AA or AK with A of diamonds. The thing is, I was running so bad that I made a stubborn call here, it turns out to be neautral EV this time but I am not happy about my play, the guy is a face up player...

I need to get better at posting. I should make it a habit to do every night.

Today was a relatively good day. I made $3500 at 2/4 FR on Stars. My $1500 FPP rakeback went through and I made that. Then I made about $1200 on cake poker when I discovered a gold mine ($300 in class which is always nice). So I have been playing alot of HU sngs at the $105 level on cake. These have proven pretty profitable but the truth is each individual match still involves alot of luck. I lost one in 6 hands where I didn't win a single hand. Then I won one in 4 hands. So I was donking around doing that (some of these players are absolutely terrible), when I decided to try a $128 6 max sng. Bingo. Not only did I run a little good and win it. It was ridiculously soft. None of the players really understood stack sizes 3betting ranges bubble play etc. One player was actually sitting out the whole time which was awesome and hilarious when this hand came up.

As for now I am off to lie in bed and hopefully fall asleep. I am becoming an insomniac and wonder what its health implications on me are. I feel like it could soon lead to playing CTS-style LAG

Wow, that sounds wierd. I have been making videos for CardRunners now for about 6 months. They had a position that I interviewed for, which I didn't get. Instead they created a new position. I am CardRunners new Brick and Mortar Marketting Manager. I will be in charge of cultivating relationships with the casinos in California and Nevada in order to host live events, gain sponsorships, and get the CR name out to the live audience public. After all, while CardRunners is an online training site, live players can learn from it, and use CR tools to become better at their live games. Hopefully with my help we can expand the live portion of CR in the forums, videos, and meetings between CR members. I am totally honored to be a part of this community which I value so much. I can't wait to prove my worth (especially since I talked myself up alot). I will report more later but I gotta go drink right now.

Play good Run bad Day 23

23 Days into November and I am struggling. But I played a great HU game today against a LAG on 2 tables, took him for 900. I am trying to book wins to get my confidence up, so I moved to 6max after about 400 hands of that, and ran horrible. I had a spewtard to my right on one table, we started HU but filled quickly and I couldn't get a dime from him. He sucked out and checked 3 times which was kinda nice but shitty. I played great today and am convinced that it is possible to run this bad, I don't understand luck but I know I played great. I am booking my $35 winning session today and am looking forward to a better tomorrow.

Also I noticed I don't post alot when I am losing. This is because I have begun to feel like a degenerate. So I thought about that today and realized, degenerates isolate themselves when they lose and lie to people about their winnings and stuff... Thats what I am doing. I am a degenerate. DAMN. I can live with that so long as I keep winning.

I am thinking of taking a serious move into tournaments. I will try and play less tables on average and hit up all the juicy nightly tournies for the next few months, and hopefully show good results. After a couple months I will look to determine if it is a better or worse use of my time. Also a good thing about tournies is that I can get to be In the Spotlight if I pick up something big.

I took a job with CardRunners. Its Thanksgiving and I am still awaiting all the details, but it sounds like I will be the Brick and Mortar Marketting Director for CardRunners.com. I love the title and bragged about it to my family, although I admitted that it was more of a hobby then a job and could be seen as taking a pay cut. Everyone's views are just so wierd. They are "not baller." Most of my Aunts and Uncles work really hard for not that much money. I recognize I am gifted and found a really "juicy" "job." Thank God (who I don't believe in). I could not last working 40 hours a week for the state for~$20/hr even with benefits. It is certainly not a bad job, its just not for me.
I think I scared my family today though when I kept making somewhat erroneous side bets and really wanting to follow through with wagers. At one point my Dad takes a cardboard chip we were using for a silly little card game (no money involved) and he says think I can hit your Uncle Norm from here. I am like not a chance, I betja $50 bucks, then I kinda get a face reaction from him, and I am like $20, $10 $5, and he is like I am just gonna try it, and of course he barely gets the thing off the table and I am like, damn I do have a gambling problem (but it was such a +EV bet).

I guess in some situations if I'm a little irritated I will become slightly more aggressive, but that might be a good thing not a bad thing. The best way to avoid tilt is to always be conscious of the fact that you are able to make money off poker. You are able to take money from retards just by clicking your mouse on the internet a few hours a day. Respect that gift that has been graciously planted in your life and you'll learn to respect your money to the point where you don't throw it away like the people you normally take it from. Choosing Poker as a Profession

A lot of us love the game of poker. No Limit Hold Em is a hit taking off across the country, and even the world. There is nothing like unwinding after class with a casual poker game in the dorms, or at a friend’s house.

I started playing poker my freshman year of college. After nine months of goofing around in the dorm lounges, I decided to look into learning the ins and outs. I studied every book, magazine article, online forum, and TV show I could find. Eventually, through learning and playing online, I started to eek out a couple hundred dollars in spending money each month.

For three years I stayed inside my room playing and studying poker. My grades dropped; I was barely passing. But alas, in April of my senior year, I called my Dad on the phone and told him I didn't need him paying my rent, tuition, or entertainment expenses ever again. I didn't strike it big, just big enough to finally afford my own living.

I succeeded with a career in poker, but the truth is, most people will not. It is important to know your goals before you sit down at the table. Are you playing for fun, or profit? Playing for fun is expected, and can be a blast. But it is your responsibility to manage your money properly. Don't start risking food money on poker; it’s not the way to win.

If you think poker is the answer to your financial problems, you are likely wrong, but not always. Start slow. You will not become an internet pro overnight. Practice at the smallest stakes until you have proven you are ready to move up. Use good bankroll management. In order to be a winner you need to withstand getting extremely unlucky, which is unavoidable if you play long enough. Keep at least 2000 big blinds in reserve on top of the money you use to play with. Know when to take breaks. Everyone tilts, and it is important to recognize when you are playing less than your best game. When it happens, don’t be afraid to stop immediately. Take a breather, and maybe wait a day or more before going back to the games. This job is stressful, and there is no way around it, you must find your own way to deal with it. I personally suggest soothing techno at full blast, and 1^st person shooters. Study hard. Knowledge is power, and the person with the most knowledge makes the most money. Look for the best advice and listen to it. There is no reason to ever stop learning. Take poker magazines with you to class or work, and when you have free time, dive in. Have a back up plan. Every good plan has a contingency plan, and this is especially important with poker. Having skills in other fields are essential in case anything shall go wrong in your pursuit for success through poker.

At the end of a long day, it’s important not to let the stresses of work carry over. Make sure you find time to go out and have fun every once in a while. Forget about the bad beats, +EV decisions, and coolers, and let loose on the town.

-4k Day

It seems like ever since I started playing 5/10, the swings have been big, and daily. Instead of a slow and steady + a couple hundo day, I am having 5k days -4k days 3k days then -3k days. The swings are concerning me 2 ways, first I stil believe that I have been in a real cold streak since a week after Aruba. But more than that I accept that variance skyrockets when skill levels collide, which means, maybe I don't have as big of an edge as I thought I did. So far my winrate is shitty at 5/10 and so this theory holds. I consistently outplay people, but the suckouts seem to be effecting me in both bad ways. They make me feel and play worse, and they hurt my winning rates. I feel I am on the low end of variance. But I will fight it out. There WILL be one day for me in the future, where my winrate looks alot better, and I can be baller again. But until then, I am going to study for my midterm, take a short break, and run on my elliptical while watching CR vidz.

Ahhh, thats why I'm not doing so well. I haven't taken the time to post on the blog. Where has the time gone... Well I am not looking so hot, really shot my winrates these last few days. 5/10 Winrate is at .92 over 25k hands, and 3/6 is at 2.44 over 54k hands. That is definetely not okay!! Also I lost a buyin with AA in a reraised pot at 10/20 and decided to move down for now, but the game was really juicy and I see myself there again in the next few months. Overall I am up 26, 258 in cash, but I believe I am down 3k or so in tournies, which means.... Doomer has caught up to me. We are in a dangerous spot. Despite poor recent results, I have high spirits. I have been playing Halo 3 alot, and just got a new exercise elliptical which I use 20 minutes every day. I am going to take today off and maybe tomorrow, to finish up a paper and watch some instructional vids, but Wed-Sunday its on, and I will easily bounce back from this little slump. Now I have to combine databases to find out how I am doing in the bet. My ring stats from my desktop say: $19,574.15 . My ring stats from my laptop say: $7,776.25. And my Tourny stats are... not so hot since the WCOOP main event, even though I entered with FPPs, at -$3470.96. Giving me a grand total of $23,879.44. Hopefully we can find out where Doomer is soon, but I think I am in the lead, especially since he will be distracted in Puerto Rico.

Back from Aruba, Back to School

Late at night before leaving from Aruba, Clay and I stayed up all night to finish the 45 10 oz beers we still had left in the fridge. We got hammered and laughed it up playing halo and watching BeerFest and Entorauge. He got really wasted and I ended up leaving while he was passed out on the couch. We never went to bed, and I was really hammered while trying to get onto the plane to go to Atlanta. From Atlanta to Cali, there was this really wierd looking old fat guy that took up half my seat, and he smelt bad . But I made it home and I made about $900 playing online while travelling!!! Today I unpacked and hung out with the girlfriend (twice) and got to school early and made another $600 playing online.

So for the trip I basically brought $10400 and left with $9400, and paid for everything with cash, so it went well. I was about break even for credit card roulette, maybe a lil bit of a dog, spending around $550 I think. We had a blast overall. I got AJ to drink sake and eat calamari, and I sucked out on Clay in a 6k pot with OESFD against TT on a q962 board (I reraised pre and bet flop with air turned the monster draw and shoved, he made a sick good call).

I am in class right now, and it seems like this is going to be a nice quarter. Had good music in the car ride here, and I am feeling good for the months to come, and I will beat Doomer to 50k for the bet!!!

Aruba Update

So far I have played a decent amount of poker. Today was the first day since we got here, 5 days ago, that we went in the ocean. I got to wakeboard, but couldn't land a flip, the boat sucked and had no wake. Lost 2k at 10/20 and yesterday 4k at 25/50 (which was sooo juicy). Overall I am down for the trip, but I have made some back playing online, mainly headsup. Clay is in day 2 of the Main Event, and tomorrow, I am moving down to 5/10 until I make some monies...

Of course I am cock blocked by my beautiful girlfriend 2400 miles away, but I promised my friends it was going to be the best party in Aruba, and I will do whatever it takes to live up to that.

Aruba is tight so far. I moved up to the 10/20 really fast, which plays alot like the 1/2 on Stars. I got staked for the 25/50 game and made 1400, 700 for myself. I made it all from stacking some old guy on a 322 board with 88 vs 55. We played short 25/50 and it was easy money, but today when I went back, Taylor, and Andrew, and 1 other pro were sitting, and then there were a whole bunch of nits, so I backed off and hustled some people at a 5/10 game which was fine. I played really lag and got alot of action, but made one big mistake for 1200, as well as got sucked out on wiht AA vs QQ AI PF. But whatever. We have yet to make it to the beach, and hopefully we will go jet skiing tomorrow.

Overall I played well, there were two spots where I expected to either be allin or my opponent would fold, and both times, they flat called which killed my correct action. Sorry for no recent updates. Things have been going a little poorly lately. Don't get me wrong I have made money, but I have ran really bad at 5/10 up until today and it really didn't feel good. Today I made almost 5k and will probably come back later tonight and make it. I am going to take a little break for now. As far as the bet goes I am stomping. I am up 6592 in cash games and after placing 90th in the WCOOP up 1656 in tournaments. Total, +$8248

Also Doomer took a big hit at 5/10 and is around break even since the start. It looks like he is taking a couple day break for the weekend after just being really cold decked.

Day 2 of the Bet

So far, not so good. I moved up to 5/10 today and got swatted down. I lost 1 buyin with QQ vs AK, and another with KK vs AA (almost got away from it). Then I decided to move down to 3/6 and got KK vs AA, almost folded it again (this is how good I am... almost). Besides coolers and cold decks I played really well and anticipate making alot of money tomorrow. For the last days I am down 17.30, and doomer is up about 3.5k, so he has an early lead. Overall I have already played 8k hands and 12 hrs. I am really just destroying 12 table full ring 3/6, I feel like 5/10 is a big leap and I may hold off on it tomorrow. I plan on putting in 8 hour sessions both Saturday and Sunday, then I might take a small break Monday, and give lessons. I have a video to make for CR sometime this weekend as well. I will keep ya posted on the bet.

The Bet - First to 50k - Me vs Doomer

Doomer and I both looked back on the year and realized we have been neck and neck grinding our way up through the limits. We both had made about 50k from Jan 1 - Sept 1, so we thought we would make things interesting. Starting tomorrow Sept 6 2007 we have a first to $50k bet. Rules: Only online winnings count, including tournaments and satellites. The bet must be completed by Dec 31 or its a push (won't happen). Poker Tracker needs to document the winnings. Honor system. The wager: A measely $400, but its enough to keep both of us motivated and off Starcraft (unless of course we are both playing at the same time). I will post my results and his on a regular basis, times will get tough as we get closer to the deadline. Obviously when we are in Aruba, there won't be much action.

I got the internet back today and I love it. These two 28" monitors rule along with my Next Gen Linksys router, and new cable modem. I got a new 52" Sharp Aquos, but HDTV is not offered in my area. I now have my own office to work in, its nice not being bugged by the gf when I have a late night starcraft session. It cost me a whole month of winnings to get my house setup, but hopefully I won't have to spend any more money for a while, except Aruba :P

I have been on a good run these last few days. I feel that I can 12 table very successfully, and expect to see a phenomenal winrate in the long run.

I studied for a midterm so I didn't play much today, aced the exam though. Looking back on the last 13 days it turns out I am a monster. I have played 30.5k hands this month, up 6.1k, although my winrates aren't looking stellar @ 1.92PTBB/100 over 13k hands at 3/6 NL and 2.8PTBB/100 over 15k hands. What I am interested in is my VPIP which has moved up to 19.5 from 17.5. Awesome, I am a nutjob :P

I actually made money for the first time today at HU poker, playing .50/1, it was a cakewalk and my last lesson with Q really hit the spot for me. He played p3achy HU and I got to watch. His play just gave me new insight into HU and I seem to be doing better. For now I will stay at the .50/1 until I hit 10k hands and show a profit. Good Friday 3/6 NL Session

I wanted to post alot of my questionable hands here, maybe get some feedback. I played really well this session and my luck graph says I ran almost exactly average which I kinda expect. I lost one 75/25 for 400 which brought me back down to not running godly.

99 vs apparently thin vbet - This hand leads to another. Today people were so wild I felt calling this would be +EV, because they may be doing something ridonkulous about 25% of the time. Didn't have a solid read on this opponent, just the whole flow of the day in general.

The other Hand, Same Hand - Here I feel like this guy calls Raises OOP with suited connectors, and I see a missed flush draw here ALOT. He doesnt have trips, and his value bets with a K or A would be an expected 1/4 - 1/2 of pot. So what Can he bet the river so big with? I couldn't figure it out, and was really expecting the pot to come my way. Then I go OH 2 outter, good value bet... People critisize me for playing like this, but I find that my style induces bluffs more often than others.

This is horrible - I am not perfect either... I almost never do this, and don't recommend it, I will get creamed for posting it probably.

RRRRR - I know I am good, and this guy is horrible. Check out this other hand too - I know Q high is good! Didn't see a BD flush hitting him. I would have called with Q high, instantly! Good read right.

Tricky regular and irregular play - FoxFox1 says I played this horribly, I really don't want ipokedher to see this hand. I thought I liked the play but Fox says its very bad and transparent.

Just look at the river - Blocking minbet, guy could have had a J so I don't think I am throwing away money, I just don't want to see a huge river bet and am pretty sure this will stop him from raising without a FullHouse.

Doing Better

The poker life is no doubt a life filled with big ups and big downs. I feel on top of my game, yet my winrate is rather low. I will always continue to reexamine my flaws and take advice, but I feel like I am crushing 2/4NL 6max right now, and I will continue to crush the games until I can call myself an avid headsup pro. Here is my lifetime graph at 2/4NL

There are a couple things worth noting. The big upswing was when I felt like I was playing the best poker of my life. and the flat area from 73k to 88k was where I felt like shit coming off a bad run of headsup and alot of live play (which I think altered my mind and game). Overall I wish I was maintaining a much higher winrate, and won't move up to 5/10 NL until I can hit 4BB/100 at 2/4 6max. I don't want to make this a promise, since I am a multitablewhore it is always hard to keep a high winrate.

The best part of 2/4 NL right now is that the regulars are actually horrible. Today a regular actually posted hands that we played and he folded on the LiquidPoker forums and basically told me I can run him over while I am sitting at 4 of his tables. Thank you BigRob, perhaps in the future you will use more common sense, but who am I to stop you. Tomorrrow I am giving a lesson to milkman, and then I am thinking of recording a 2/4 NL video. The thing is I am worried I will give away my game to my direct opponents, and lose a big portion of $. I will think it over on whether to release it to the general public or not, trying to determine if there are any plus EV reasons to throw it out there.

I still haven't had much time to play this month, but am still a loser anyways, especially in headsup, which I havent played in a while. I am in the red for everything right now. Since I am just kind of ignoring headsup for now, I am only down 766 in $4 6max, over 22k hands, which is just variance I suppose. I am playing really well and have changed up my game, increasing my stats to 20/17 from 18/16, which I really like. The games are pretty soft still, but I can't seem to win any 80/20s or 75/25's when I get all my money in.

This may be a little spewy, but my read was that my opponent was weak, and he is a bad player who will just fold a lot of one pair hands, without much hesitation.

Just a bad beat against a player I ritualistically pwn.

Tell me what you think of this semi -bluff. The reason I reraised preflop is because guy is aggro, and has raised that spot 4 times in a row getting 3 walks. Just bad luck I think.

We are outta the Jockey Club Thank GOD. My girlfriend is literally on her way up to our room at the Wynn right now. Two nights ago me sakisaki and cosmo got a table at Tryst and had a sweet ass balla time, pics to come check out cosmo's blog too. It was cool and I danced my ass off. We went back to Lyric's and I instapassedout. I have been playing great poker, lost about a buyin live last night with top set to gutshot and pair (weeeeeee). I made some money playing headsup on Full Tilt, which I am going to try and keep doing to build my roll. Tonight I think we are going to Pure and it should be a blast. The trip is almost over and I am honestly looking forward to being at my own house soon. I hate all these Fing tourists that are always walking in my way. Bad beats yo.

In Vegas Part 4

What a day today! I entered into the 5k 6max deepstack tourny. I played the best poker of my life. I made one big mistake against Mark Seif with blind vs blind I move in with KQ and sucked out to his AQ, which put him on tilt. It was awesome he literally tilted off the rest of his stack after that. I made a very large chip lead when I had a very key hand that didn't go my way. I raised UTG with AKo and raise 3x, Mark Seif calls and half tight half retarded loose guy raises from the small blind which he has done frequently with alot of hands, my image is shitty but I have a real hand and 4bet to 9k, he tanks for 2 minutes before I call time and he instacalls with 99, what a DONKEY. I barely lose the coinflip with like 20 outs on the turn, and bust down to 6kish. I feel like my run is over but run good and double up with 78s vs ajo. I played poker with Tobin - Spiderman/Peter Parker - and he knocked out a guy at my table. Then our table broke and I moved to none other than rainkhan's table two to his right. This really sucked, I was running around 20 BBs and had to really tighten up. Then to top it off a few hands down, Micheal "The Grinder" Mizrachi sits one to his left and now I am screwed. I wait and wait, and move in with A4s and suck out on the grinders AJ, very standard, but still lucky. Then my knock out comes when I lose JJ to AQ allin preflop, I just needed to run a little better. I got 128th out of 760 people and feel really good about it even though I didn't make the money, and neither did any of the people I swapped percentages with. Saki Saki backed me for 10 percent so 500 is the only money I got back.

Other than that I got to meet MilkMan, Q, and Iamalex in person for the first time today. They are all cool kids, but I can see how Q is so successful, he clearly presents himself in a professional way, it stands out fo sho. We had a blast, got kicked out of our spa and fitness center, and played blind mans bluff which Q of course won. I made some money on some prop bets when Q challenged Cosmo to a push up competition, easy money!!!

Tomorrow it looks like Q is staking me for the 2k WSOP event and I will try my hardest to prove myself in it. Its already 4:40 AM and the tourny starts at 12PM so I am off to bed.

In Vegas Part 3

I left the Wynn with more money than I came with for the first time this trip. I played great, but may have made two crucial mistakes. Donkey limps I raise from the button or cutoff with ten nine offsuit, flop comes AT7 two hearts. Guy checks I bet he calls the turn brings another Ace, not the A of hearts I think that was on the board already. He bets out $50 into a big big pot I raise to 150 after deciding he is a donk leading with a flush draw or possibly a ten or straight draw. He calls, River is a blank and he instashoves for $220, I call pretty quickly and he turns over A9, I feel slightly retarded but am amazed at his good/bad play and move on fine.

A little while later, we are playing shorthanded 3 limpers and I raise on the button with k9 of spades, folds around to a regular I know very well who says will you stop doing that alright fine I will call and gamble with ya... So I already know he is weak but looking to make a very meak calldown or bluff or something. The flop brings A64 two spades, he checks I bet my Flush draw he calls, I figure him for weakness for sure. He checks the turn and I think for a while and check behind, its a ten and I feel its hard to represent an Ace and he already doesn't believe me (since he may think I check behind strong aces for pot control). The river is an offsuit Queen and he instabets 300. This guy is soooooo never doing this with any 1 pair hand, so I immediately know its either a missed draw or something like A6 a4. The thing is, this guy likes to limp suited connectors and would likely never call a raise OOP with weak aces, so i am already starting to rule out a large portion of his range. Another thing is he is kinda nice, and talks when he is strong and gets quiet when he is weak. So I buckle up and make the call and he goes you win and turns over 36s for middle pair, I slap myself in the face and go "Its good". The donkey starts rewarding himself with pats on the back and talk about a sweet value bet and I get way tilted because I REALLY like my call. So I leave the table and ended up about $500 maybe a little more, I will count it later. I doubled through Shane, who is an online pro, and a cool guy at the table, it was pretty standard bottom set vs top 2 with j9x flop turn K, for only 100 BBs. Also I met Rekrul, he is of course god!

Yesterday Dustin Dickenson took second in the 1500 NLHE tourny I busted out of and we all went out to dinner at a Sushi restraunt. It was baller, they bought pretty much one of everything, alot of saki and some $450 dessert wine with 6 different desert dishes. Then I didn't have to pay for anything, thanks alot guys!!! We had a blast and planned on meeting up at a nightclub later, but we never did after changing and trying to get into one at the Palms. So we just went back and played poker and I got no love.

This hand is sick:

5/10 Live No Limit 9 handed UTG limps, button limps, I complete in SB with a5spades, bb checks, flop comes Aclubs ten spades and 5 clubs I bet 30 UTG raises to 100 button cold calls I raise to 380 UTG folds and BB calls, I put him squaw on a fd, turn comes a J diamonds, I bet 490 into a brewing pot of about 890, which was definetely too small. He makes me fan out my hundreds thinks for a while and calls, river comes a 4 of spades and I check to him, he looks at his cards and I get a glimpse clearly at the 2 of clubs, then he shoves allin for my remaining 2k. I super tank it and finally call, I know there is only 1 hand he can have and he turns it over, the 23 of clubs, I am like doh and move on. Please gimme some feedback. Guy is a regular who plays deepstacked frequently. I wouldnt say he is great, but he is aggressive. It comes down to figuring out if he limps alot of suited Kings and Queens like K2 Q2, or 24s, and if he ever bluffs a missed flush draw in a huge pot on the river, which i think he does because I have a very weak image and could fold 2 pair on that flop. I prolly woulda folded if I didn't see his hole card. Tell me what you think.

In Vegas Part 2

Alright so I entered and busted the WSOP event 35 $1500 NLHE event. Thank you to my backers for supporting me. Basically I got down to 10 BB really fast by playing standard. Then I doubled up a few times and worked my stack to 12k with blinds 100/200 25 ante. Two hands ultimately led to my demise from there. I button raise and the BB who is superlaggy 3bets me 700 on top of my 500 raise (3.5 BBs over 2.5 BBs), he has me covered. I make the call with KQo and the flop comes down Qxx, he bets 800 and I raise to 2300, which many people argue with me about. He sighs and calls at which point I put him on a better hand since I think he folds JJ or lower. Essentially I feel like I have gotten my information about my hand, so I check behind the turn to fold the river, but his bet is 2K into a 7Kish pot and I am thinking of folding but eventually call, he turns over QQ and it all kinda comes together but I still stand by my play ( I need to make chips in order to have a chance in the tourny). The very next hand I 2.5 R with KK 3 callers, flop comes q9x SB bets out 2k into 2300 pot and I shove for 6500ish he thinks a minute and calls with Q8 for Top pair and back door flush draw. He spikes the 8 on the turn and at showdown they tell me he has me covered by 125 chips. GG well played.

So far I am down in cash, playing at the Wynn. The 5/10 NL is really juicy and I was up for all day today until a questionable hand and then a suckout. Nothing worth mentioning in detail, except my table was extremely juicy and I was essentially running over it. The guy to my immediate right had at least 25 screwdrivers while we were playing and was making 200-300 dollar opens on the regular.

The other night we had a baller time at the Tangerine and I got to meet and hang out with alot of the pros. We were VIP and had a total of 3 tables and a bunch of grey goose. We ended the night by getting a limo to the spearmint rhino and buying Mango a girl on girl lapdance, which was awesome.

In Vegas Part 1

I have been here for a couple days already. It has been a blast going bar hopping, but we have yet to go to a nightclub. Last night instead of going to Pure, a nightclub in Cesears or somewhere, we hitched a ride with Lyric over to Ryan Daut's house and proceeded to play some beer pong and party it up. It was a blast and a half even though I lost in pong. We all ended up in the spa telling ridiculous stories, then cosmo and mango got into a chalk fight with the blue chalk from the pool table, I will post up that video later. I haven't gambled a bit yet but Im down about $500. I am going to start a journal to document my expenses so I know where the hell all this money is going. Party on, I start my first WSOP event tomorrow.

Graduation Day

It's early morning right before my graduation. My family has come down from all over the place to watch me wear a goofy outfit and walk across the stage for 3 seconds. I am happy to have them here and we will be going to my parents house in Sacramento for the after party. Tomorrow Shana and I leave for Vegas and its gonna be sick. I got a hand full of stacks (better grab an umbrella).

I missed a final for one of my classes due to a miscommunication but was able to make it up, and overall I feel like I did really well in all my classes. Lets take a look at finals week for poker:

Take a look at this Sweet Sweet Hand. There was a lot of history there and I made a killer read. I "took" 110th in the Sunday Million, but I really sold my seat to Clay - MezmerizePLZ - for 3400+5% of his action. I was pretty deep in it and had a review section to go to, he wanted to buy it, and I got a really fair price (he was desperate). I got 5% of Cosmo as well and he took 210th, overall it was a fun run and I pwned at the tables. Also I got 42nd in the 10K FPP to WSOP Main Event. 1-9 made the money, I played well there and got really close, but couldn't seal the deal when it counted. For both tournies I was chip leader at least once.

Just Aced a final today and feeling pretty good. My girlfriend is out of town and I just put in a decent session. I bought a TON of new clothes and a pocket knife for Vegas, I withdrew 10k from Pokerstars yesterday and it should hopefully be here soon so I will have some cash. I am really looking forward to the trip. If I haven't told you, I am going to be there from June 18th until July 6th. The first couple of days will be with my girlfriend but after that its going to be alot of poker. Then I will fly her back out July 3rd-6th and we will attend the CardRunners meeting party on the 5th. It is going to be a blast and hopefully I can make some money in the process.

Here is a graph of the last 4 days, a little U shaped but still solid. My winrate at 3/6 looks good for june, but its only 1.6 BB/100 if you look at it from May. I think it took a month to get used to it. You really have to let go of the idea of money and start getting Dirty and gambling. Today a player named DougDabase took me for a run, he is difficult to play against, but I have a strategy, it just took me some stacks to figure it out. Overall I am really happy with my winrate and success. I feel like I am still relying on my cards a little too much, and I know I have some minor leaks that I need to fill. I see myself at the 5/10 tables by the end of July, unless I lose all my bankroll in Vegas, which is a possibility.

I played well and I did well. I really only counted 1 blatent mistake I made, but it was still a tough decision. Also at one point I thought about folding KK to a nit but moved allin and sucked out against AA... payback baby. Today I ran infinetely good and am really starting to outplay the weaker regulars. I stacked AlotofAction in a pot where he just plain didn't believe me. He is a little wacked out in the head but overall a very tough opponent. :}

I played some headsup last night after having my third winning day in a row. I am back on top and really playing well. Headsup went well I sat at 1 3/6, 2/4, 1/2 and .50/1 table. Overall I played well except for one hand, which I will edit into this post later. This one hand took all my profit and could have been avoided, but as far as a long term move, I think it was good, my opponent did have to flop trips to call me, so I not too disappointed. I decided that I will work 6max for the day and do headsup late at night.
My official dates for vegas are: June 18-30. I may be there longer depending on a couple of things, success, fun, and friends in the main event. From June 18 (my girlfriends birthday) til June 21 I will be hanging out with my girlfriend and her parents and not playing any poker. On the 21st they are expected to leave and I will be entering a $1500 buy in tournament in the WSOP. From there we will see if success takes me to the top. For me these large tournies are obviously high risk high reward, but I feel that my live play and the poor playing field will be enough to show a huge ROI, I just hope its today rather than tomorrow. I admit that I am a little bit nervous, and hopefully I can stay on my A game to make it deep. I will be trying to play more tournaments and learn from Rainkhan as much as I can so I am prepared.
Lyric and Mango are getting a sick ass house on the outskirts of town, I am soooo coming over and partying with or without their permission :-P

I have hit a really rough patch of bad luck and have dropped to .66 PTBB/100. It is somewhat painful but I am still playing as good as I can. I think I am playing worse because the cards arent there. Good reads, bad rivers, etc. Standard variance with a hair of bad play, which I think is inherent anytime someone is running bad.

Tonight I'm getting wasted, hopefully my friend Cosmo is coming down from Berkely to party with us for my friend Nick's 21st Birthday. I got Nick a lil bottle of Don Julio and we should be playing beer pong and beer die all night long (2 keggar). I have to be careful since I satelited in to the sunday million 2morrow and I don't wanna be hungover.

The Sunday Million was retarded. I played really well but it was sick. I only won 3 pots, each pot was preflop and each time I had a big pair, when I raised with less than big pairs they "knew"it and repotted me or beat me postflop. But while busting out of the Mil I made over 3k 3-7 tabling the 2/4 NL. I did really well, played really well, and got paid off like every time. Don't ask me how but when he Reraised me I just knew it was AK. The guy was a horrible predictable player, as you can see from his play in this hand. I was going to check call the flop and go for a check down. When he checked the flop I am 90% sure its AK but still want to check the turn for pot control. I was prolly ready to stack off at that point because my read was so strong. You could argue for a turn bet, but I foresaw the river value bet that I had in mind assuming no AKQ. I got it right and extracted some more $ out of him, poor idiot :-P I think the only way he gets me off of my hand is bet flop and turn, any other combo and I am gonna call down.

Doing 7+ BB/100 at 1/2, 6.3 BB/100 at 2/4 and 187.3 BB/100 at .50/1 (a crazy homegame where I made out like a bandit against FrinkX and Hansen Jr.) for a total of ~$2500 in the last 3 days over 6193 hands. The 1/2 competition is just really weak right now and I am really on top of my game. I'm getting a lot of action from the donks because I am giving alot of action.

I have made $10,700 in first quarter cash games(since the beginning of the year) and anticipate making double that here in the second quarter. I will have to start saving so I can pay my taxes, ew. I told my Dad that I should be living on my own by summer.

I was killing march at 5BB/100+ until this stagnant part right near the middle. I feel that first I was very unlucky for the downswing that resulted from 16k-18k then the next few days after that downswing I was a little off in my game and it shows in my results. I became a little weak tight and probably lost my edge. That combined with the bad cards - the usual AA big blind folded to me, sets no pay, small pairs too much play, the standard stuff. Overall I am still happy at the results, and am still having a small discipline problem and tilt control problem which I will continue to work on.

My History: How I got started and thrived in poker

I started playing $5 buy ins in the dorms my freshman year. It got really crazy. We would play every night til the sun rose, and sometimes all throughout the weekend without even sleeping. There was a pretty close nit group of guys. After doing that and losing probably around $300 in 9 months, I decided to look into poker, the odds and the how. I never really knew a proper strategy, just messing around with my friends laughing it up. I read a small stakes book, then another (now at like 22 poker books). I deposited $50 online and played .25/.50 limit hold em. I am able to learn really quick when I am interested in something. I began picking up the game right away. Just sticking to ABC poker and after depositing I think $250 more, I began to start winning and grinding my way up to the 3/6 Limit games.

I was doing fine, and just started expanding into very low limit tournaments. But I wanted to try NL hold em, because I liked the idea of being able to bet any amount at any time. The adjustment was a little tough but I was still making a small amount of money. I eventually found out about PT and PAHUD and bought those with my bankroll. Then things went sour. A few things happened. I built up a nice roll and cashed alot of it out. I went on a downswing and was playing .50/1 with an $800 roll. And, my friend and I had teamed our remaining bankrolls together to shoot at the 5/10NL where I eventually went busto. We were having crazy .50/1 games at my house (I bought a full sized poker table). There were these drug dealer friends that came by and blew through money. At one point I think we had like 3 grand on the table, and the table would go from Friday night til Monday morning, even through finals.

I took about a year off of internet poker, but ended up dropping out of school to play live for 6 months. After making a little more money than my parents were giving me for school, I decided to go back. They were always able to support me, and wanted me to get a part time job, but I couldn't do it. After a while I decided to go back to online poker and pick up where I left off in an attempt to help them with paying for all the stuff they do (Im a little spoiled). I grinded away and had lots of successful friends to learn from. My friend Jeremy was killing the 5/10 online and the 10/10/20 game at a casino called Lucky Chances. I watched him play and his style was very unique. He is about a 14/12/9 kinda player, very dangerous, and deadly accurate with his bluffs (which always work because he is so fing tight). I copied his style at the low limits and had mild success with a roll of about 2000. Finally I was introduced to CardRunners by a friend. Watching some CR videos changed my idea of how to play and I slowly made the adjustment from super TAG to just TAG (sometimes LAG). A Combination of CR all the books and magazines I read, and the forums on 2p2 helped me get everything I have.
The real reason I am successful is because I literally dedicated the last 3 years to learning how to play poker. There hasn't been a day that has gone by where I haven't thought about the game; there hasnt been a week that has gone by where I haven't played the game; there hasn't been a month that has gone by without me reading something new... I'm addicted, its a serious problem, but I'm making money so its okay.

The best advice I can give you, is to listen to your family and heed their advice, but don't always take it. Second piece of advice is keep your eye on the prize (long term profit not right now profit, etc.)

My girlfriend just left to go first, back to Walnut Creek, and from there to Florida for a week. I am coping with the loss by playing extremely large amounts of poker. So far made 1600 in one day, and an additional $250 for making a sick headsup video with SeanNolan. Overall everything went really well, and I had some free time to hang out with some people playing poker over at my hosue. I am trying to get work done on this CR project I have started, but so far progress is slow.

Hand of the Day - I was very impressed that I lost because my opponent is a supernitty regular. No way I was folding on any street just an absolute cooler and well played by him, but poorly played given my range.

Started the day pretty bad lost $400 in 10 minutes, took a break ate dinner bought beer and came back. Played (without drinking) a nice session went down some more but... started climbing back up really quick. Overall I played excellently and felt bad about the losing part for a little bit, but man did I outplay a lot of people and I am proud of it. 9 tabling is a lil bit tougher. Finished the day in the green by a decent amount, makes up for the slow week.

Well yesterday I played for a while and was put in a lot of cold deck situations. I found myself folding overpairs on multiple occassions, running QQ into KK (well played by him although I only call with QQ KK or AA). Then I thought I would take my skills over to the Omaha tables because it looked like NLHE was tightening up and the donkeys were leaving. That was just a laughing disaster, I didn't even feel bad losing $300 in 44 hands. First hand I get AAKT single suited and get a large portion in preflop then get the rest in on the flop with FD and overpair. Quick $200. Then I run AAQT into At74 and lose on the flop KJ7 allin against a shortstack for another $80. Overall I won 2 pots, yes two pots, in 44, one I picked up the blinds, and the other took it down with a cbet. Like I said no big deal, but definetely a record in losing sessions. Today I made some money back, but it still feels like a loss for some reason, perhaps because I don't have as much money as I did a couple of days ago, but its close and I am not going to let little things like short term results get in my way of conquering the tables this weekend.
I started a Calendar and a google group to help organize myself and communicate better with all my student. I promise, if you chose me as your instructor, I will dedicate time on and off the felt to helping you improve.

Interesting hand of the day
Here I had a strong read that my opponent would really like any hand from the button, he was an aggro donkey with 60/30/4 stats, so I wanted to let him do the work. I advocate this route if you ever get involved with an aggro donkey like this one. Let them hang themselves and if they suck out, don't let it get to you, just keep grinding.

I played really well this weekend and got rewarded with about $2000 in profit. I was planning on playing the Sunday Million (and a half) but I got extra drunk the night before and was too hungover. Plus who knew it was daylights savings, I woke up too late. I made a lot of moves and ran some pretty high level bluffs, but I have yet to decide if they are good plays or bad plays as they don't work every time, yet the reward when they do work is nice.
I also got to give some really good lessons. Thanks to everyone that has shown interest in my teachings.

I went to the doctor today and got checked out. Hopefully I'm not too ill. Since feeling sick I have decided to bring myself down to 3 or 4 tables and play very short hours. So far that has really boosted my BB/100, but my hourly is way down.

Battle of the Bay review

This year's battle of the Bay brought about 20 two plus two'ers to a house out in the Fremont area of San Jose. The tournament was $50 buy in NLHE and I started it off strong but lost a coinflip for a lot of chips and finished pretty early. After the tourny we started a cash game with 2/3 Blinds and a $.50 ante. The structure was awesome, but my opposition was tough. Overall there were 3 high stakes pro's, an experienced nit, and a loose aggressive maniac. The maniac ended up doubling up and leaving quickly and the rest of us battled it out until I finally realized that I was in a losing game and needed to stop playing. It was awesome to be a part of though, because it gave me the high stakes 6 handed cash feel, without the expense. It often went Raise Reraise fold preflop, and there were almost no showdowns. I was able to pick up alot of aggressive tactics that I have added to my arsenal. Overall I lost about $400, but it was worth the experience, and I got rather cold decked for a $200 pot. I plan on going to their next game, and hopefully will walk away with some cash next time.

September to February 14th

Just found out January was a losing month for me, my first ever, yippie. But thats only in cash, I think I was ahead in tournies.
